The Bernadette MacNeil Award

The Bernadette MacNeil Award is awarded annually to a teacher who demonstrates the leadership quality of compassion for those in need, demonstrates a supportive role among colleagues and promotes good fellowship among staff.

The Doreen Brady Memorial Award

The Doreen Brady Memorial Award is awarded annually to a member of the Ottawa-Carleton Unit of OECTA who has made an outstanding contribution to OECTA at the local and/or provincial levels.

The Elizabeth Patch Memorial Award

The Elizabeth Patch Memorial Award is awarded annually to a teacher demonstrating a high level of professionalism and commitment towards Catholic education and service to their community.

Sylvester Quinn Memorial Award

The Sylvester Quinn Memorial Award in the amount of $500.00 is awarded to one graduating student in each Ottawa-Carleton Catholic High School to assist students in pursuing a post-secondary education.

The criteria for this award is service to others, scholastic achievement, need for financial assistance and strong moral and ethical values.

Teacher Education Grant

In an effort to encourage and support our members who are taking courses, OECTA Ottawa-Carleton has initiated a Teacher Education Grant Fund. The criteria for this grant are based on financial need. Preference will be given to those individuals in the lower QECO categories. The recipient of this award will be chosen by the local OECTA Awards Committee.

There are 10 grants of $600.00 each available to teachers through the Teacher Education Grant. Applications will be received and reviewed twice a year – at the end of October and the end of April. Submissions will be accepted no later than October 30 for the first session and no later than April 30 for the second.

The Dr. William Crossan Memorial Bursary

The award is given to a student enrolled in the Bachelor of Education program at the Faculty of Education, University of Ottawa. The recipient of this bursary must demonstrate interest in teaching in the Catholic school system, motivation in selecting the field of education as a career choice, and financial need. The recipient of the award is selected by the Awards Office at the Faculty of Education, University of Ottawa.

 

Provincial Awards, Grants and Fellowships

Three types of awards are presented at OECTA’s Annual General Meeting. Nominations are made by a unit after approval by its members at a general meeting. Applications for the following three awards must be received in the Provincial Office by October 15 of each year:

Marion Tyrrell Award of Merit
This award honours an OECTA member who has made an outstanding contribution to education in Catholic schools or to the Association.

Honorary Membership
OECTA may confer an honorary membership on a individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the Association or to Catholic education. The recipient is someone who is not eligible for the Award of Merit or for Life Membership.

Life Membership
OECTA may confer up to two Life Memberships yearly on former active members who have given distinguished service at the provincial level and to their unit.

Postgraduate Scholarships

Each year three memorial scholarships named for Rose Cassin, Doreen Brady and Father J. Harold Conway, may be awarded to qualified members for full-time post-graduate study. Each is valued at up to $10,000. Application deadline is April 1.

Religious Study Fellowships

Three fellowships of up to $10,000 each may be available to members each year for full time study in religious education. The fellowships are named for Margaret Lynch, Cecilia Rowan and Mary Babcock. Application deadline is April 1.

Bursaries

The Association provides a minimum of $10,000 each year for bursaries. Members in the pre-degree categories who are taking undergraduate courses are given priority as applicants. Members who want to pursue post-graduate studies or professional development activities are also eligible for a bursary. The maximum available to an individual is $1,000 based on financial need. Deadline for application is May 15.
