Committees      
     

Much of the business of the Association is conducted through the committee structure.

All members of the Association are encouraged to participate on an OECTA Committee.

Please consider contributing your time and talents to your Association by serving on a committee. Send us your name, school or department and choice of committee via e-mail, fax or pony.

The following is a list of OECTA Ottawa committees and their terms of reference:

Awards

Beginning Teachers

  • promote the involvement and participation of Beginning Teachers in the Association.
  • address the needs and concerns of Beginning Teachers.
  • support Beginning Teachers in their professional endeavors.

Communications

  • produce and edit Class Acts on behalf of the membership.
  • promote the Association’s position on current educational issues.
  • promote the activities and services of the Association to its members and the Catholic community.

Elementary Schools

  • identify the needs of the membership as they apply to Elementary schools.
  • recommend actions to meet these needs.
  • provide information/materials upon request to the elementary members.

Finance

  • prepare a budget for the Association at the local level.
  • invest the monies as reserve in a responsibly fiscal way.
  • present the budget at the Unit’s Annual General meeting for approval.

Health and Safety

  • be informed of Health and Safety issues, trends and concerns in the workplace.
  • identify members’ needs and recommend courses of action to address these needs.

Status of Women

  • Identify the specific needs and concerns of women in the teaching profession and society in general and to recommend courses of action to address these needs.


 

Legislation

  • study and report on matters pertaining to the Constitution, By-laws and statement of Policy and Procedures.
  • receive all resolutions submitted for consideration of the UGMs and the AGM.
  • prepare a list of resolutions eligible for consideration for the UGM and distribute them to the schools prior to the UGM.

Local Collective Bargaining

  • be informed of issues, trends and legislation impacting on collective bargaining.
  • conduct a needs survey of the membership.
  • draft an initial contract proposal for Executive approval.
  • provide support to the negotiating team through out the negotiating period.

Political Action

  • promote the Association’s positions and interests.
  • participate in political actions as required.

Professional Development

  • be informed on educational issues, trends and problems in the area of professional development.
  • identify the needs and desires of all members and recommend actions/initiatives to meet these needs/desires.
  • identify programs that will address the expressed needs of the members.

Secondary Schools

  • work towards achieving the objectives of the Association in the secondary schools.
  • identify the needs of the membership and recommend courses of actions based on these needs.
  • provide information and/or materials upon request.

Social

  • participate in the planning and organization of a variety of social events and activities, e.g.,
    • Volleyball Tournament
    • Curling Bon Spiel
    • Silver Experience
    • Committee Appreciation Dinner
    • Retirement Dinner
    • Annual Golf Tournament

Social Justice

  • inform members of the current trends and issues pertaining to equal opportunities for members based on race, creed, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and mental or physical ability.
  • identify the needs of members in the area of social justice and recommend courses of action to the Unit Executive.
  • participate in local workshops/activities to develop increased awareness of social justice issues.
